CORE Series 2009 round 1 poster

UPDATE

Due to the current wet weather, we have had to postpone this weekends opening round of the CORE Series 2009 at the Albany Creek Skate Park.

The Series will now commence on Sunday 7th of June – exactly two weeks after the original date of Sunday 24th of May.

All event details will remain the same and registrations will open at 9:00am, with the competitions starting from 10:00am.

Media Release -

In 2009 the CORE Series will be coming to South East QLD again!  The CORE Series is the largest BMX Competition Series in QLD and also features an Open Skateboarding Competition.

The highly anticipated opening round of the CORE Series will be on Sunday 24th of May at the Albany Creek Skate Park.  The first round of the CORE Series is proudly sponsored by Moreton Bay Regional Council and will be part of the 2009 Pine Rivers Festival.

BMX Riders from all across southeast QLD are expected to attend to compete in the We The People BMX Championship.  The overall series winner will walk away with $500 cash thanks to We The People Bikes, Forgotten Bikes, Subrosa and Ride On BMX Shop.

Last years winner, Nick Cooper, and last years runner up, Alex Hiam, will be among those competing for the title when the Series gets under way.  Although Nick will start the series as the deserving favourite, many people will have their eyes on the youngster, Alex.  At only 13 years of age, he will be the youngest competitor ever in the Pro category, and after his performances at the BMX Games earlier this year, he has a very good chance to go one better this year and take the title of CORE Series Champion.

“That kid is just amazing, he was only a few points behind me last year and he just keeps getting better – he is going to be the biggest threat for sure,” Nick said when asked about his youngest rival.

In the Open Skate competition, there will be some more promising youngsters on show in the McPaddens.  Last year the two boys, Dylan and Jacob, were rarely out of the top three in the junior levels, but now will be competing in the Open Class.  When asked about how they would go against the older competitors Carol McPadden (the boys mother) said “I can’t see them being too worried – they have skated with some older guys before and it only helps them get better.”

With all the exciting competitors on display across both sports, the CORE Series is bound to be the years most exciting Extreme Sports Competitions.  There are also plenty of giveaways for the crowd to make sure everyone has a great day out!

The CORE Series will have two more rounds for competitors to test their skills at before a Series Champion is announced.  These dates will be announced as soon as possible.

Sunday the 21st of December saw the 4th annual DK King of Dirt BMX Competition take place at Pine Rivers Park. The competition attracted riders from all over Australia to compete on some of the best dirt jumps in the country and they certainly did not disappoint those who turned up to cheer them on!

In the Beginner class we witnessed some of the future stars of Australian BMX riding the big jumps and doing tricks that would have only been seen in the Pro class a few years ago. It was also refreshing to see some riders on Hard Tail Mountain Bikes competing and matching it with the BMXers. In the end, Ben Richardson won the day with some clean runs featuring Supermans and 360s. Chris Stalhart (riding the MTB) came 2nd, and Jake May came 3rd after putting it all on the line to try and take the top spot.

The expert class has again stepped up from previous years – with riders bringing out a whole range of Flip variations and big Whip tricks. While all riders in the class proved that they aren’t far off the Pro Ranks, Luke Bowerman and Matt Mackellar were the stand outs. Luke and Matt were neck and neck all through the competition, with Matt only just edging Luke out for the win. Matt put together a clean final run to put all the pressure on Luke to produce something big, who, unfortunately, just couldn’t land his last jump – giving Matt the victory.

In the Pro Class, we saw many riders returning from previous years and some newcomers to the event. Regardless of whether they had ridden here before, all riders showed the crowd why Australian BMXers are among the best in the world. In the end, reigning champion, Jai Toohey, was not going to be denied back to back victories despite the best efforts on Nick Cooper (2007 runner up) and Cam Pianta who made up the top 3.

It was with a strange sense of Déjà vu that Jai qualified 1st for the final and proceeded to produce the best run of the day straight away. After Jai’s first run, everyone else knew what they had to do to win – and everyone gave it everything they had, however none could match the youngster from the Central Coast. Just as it was in 2007, Jai’s last run was basically a victory lap.

Due to the recent storms around South East QLD, the DK King of Dirt has been postponed. The recent storms and rain were so severe that the majority of the jumps were underwater late last week! Due to the severity of the damage, the course will require maintenance and is expected to return to competition standard by mid December.

Rest assured that a new date for the event will be set shortly and the DK KOD Staff will do everything they can to ensure that the jumps are back in top condition by the new date " which is likely to be in late December.

DK King of Dirt 2008 Update

Posted by Clint Sibbald + November 19 2008 3:36pm [Updated]

Media Release -

Mother Nature took a shot at levelling Brisbane and she came pretty close but unfortunately the severe weather has delayed the the construction of the DK King of Dirt course. Construction will start as soon as possible, and official practice session times will be released shortly. The DK King Of Dirt crew are working around the clock to ensure the course will be open for as many practice sessions as possible.

Riders are again reminded that you will not be able to use the jumps outside of the official practice sessions and that to practice, you must be a registered competitor with CORE Operations.

In other news, make sure you check out the new DK King of Dirt Poster for 2008 featuring last years DK King Of Dirt Champion, Jai Toohey.

Like many other riders from last year, Jai will be returning to Pine Rivers Park this year to have another shot at the title. After a big year and some awesome results on the US competition circuit, Jai will be keen to repeat his win from 2007.

Some other riders who will be competing with Jai are:

1. Nick Cooper (QLD) " Nick is probably QLDs best chance for a win. Nick
tied for first place in 2006, and was runner up in 2007.

2. Dane Searls (NSW) Dane is one of the best young Dirt Jumpers in Australia and has competed in and stood on the podium at some of the biggest events around the world. He was also the tied winner of this event in 2006.

3. Cam Pianta (VIC) Cam travels a long way for this event and with his massive bag of tricks the crowds are always glad he does! A definite threat for the win.

4. Shane Conlon (NSW) Shane will be up from Coffs to compete and after his third place in 2007, will be keen go 2 spots better in 2008.

5. Niki Buckyard (QLD) Another local with the skills to take the win. Made finals in 07 and came 4th, but was unlucky not to put together the run he wanted. Maybe a bit of luck will swing his way in 2008...

Last weekend saw the Grand Final of the CORE Series for 2008 at Kuraby Skate Park, and with more than 100 competitors in BMX and Skateboarding, there was no shortage of action!

With another massive turnout for the last round of the We The People BMX Championships, the BMXers of QLD put on another awesome show for the crowd. In the beginner class, Steve Denny put together a great run in the finals to edge out Jack Stewart and Mitchell Jamieson. Steve used some different lines and put in plenty of technical tricks to take the win. After all the scores were added up, Jason Watts become the 2008 CORE Series Champ for beginner BMX with 2 awesome performances at the first 2 events, backed up by another finals appearance at Kuraby. For his efforts, he won himself a brand new frame thanks to We The People Bikes.

Tom Brock put together another solid display in the finals to come in 3rd for the day, and wrap up the Expert CORE Series Title. Toms consistent performances through the series, and ability to put together good Finals runs ensured he kept his points lead through the series. The final round of Pro BMX for the series lived up to all expectations, with some of the best riding we have seen throughout the series. All the Pro riders put in some awesome runs, particularly Chris Courtney and Kyle Ballock, who both made it into the top 3. But, in the end, Nick Cooper proved unbeatable for the second event in a row. His super high energy runs, combined with unique lines and tricks is definitely a winning combination!
